Dear Friends and Supporters,
We are heartbroken to share that our beloved director, Marsha Martin, was hit by a car while walking in her neighborhood and passed away on Friday, October 16th.
Marsha devoted her heart and soul to the Music Makes Me Happy Chorus, very intentionally cultivating a true “chorus family” for singers with special needs and our dedicated community volunteers. Marsha led us in more than just music - we gathered together to sing, but found ourselves walking through life together in meaningful ways. We celebrate birthdays, mark holidays, send cards, and support each other through life’s ups and downs. Marsha was always there—visiting members in the hospital, cheering them on at performances outside of chorus, and showing care and gratitude for the families and caregivers who brought our members to rehearsal each week.
Her intentionality shone through in every concert program she created. Marsha spent countless hours curating themed song lists, always prioritizing music that carried deep personal meaning for her singers. She led thoughtful discussions about each song’s message, encouraging members to connect emotionally with the music while lovingly pushing the choir to reach new heights musically.
Beyond nurturing a close-knit chorus family, Marsha wisely believed our singers have a vital message for the world: one of love, acceptance, and focusing on what truly matters. Performing was central to her vision for this reason. Through our “Traveling Smiles” performances, Marsha brought the choir to hospitals, senior centers, baseball games, and even Concord Prison. Wherever we perform, audiences do not just sing along—they are moved and inspired by the pure earnestness and joy of our performers.
Marsha touched each of our lives in powerful, unforgettable ways, and we will forever be inspired by her love and dedication. While it is hard to imagine the Music Makes Me Happy Chorus without her, we are deeply grateful that our pianist, Devereux Geiger, has agreed to step into the director position for the remainder of the season.
We will continue to sing, shine, and bring joy to our community—proudly carrying forward Marsha’s extraordinary legacy.
